Dear Colleagues and Friends,

This is a second notice to inform you about our upcoming workshop on “Nuclear Structure Physics near the Coulomb Barrier”

The workshop will be held from Thursday, June 23 to Saturday June 25, 2005, i.e., just before the Nuclear Chemistry Gordon Conference. There will be a welcoming reception on the evening of June 22nd. By choosing these dates we hope that some (many) of you who may be attending the nearby Gordon Conference in New Hampshire will take the opportunity to visit us at Yale and participate in the workshop. We will arrange a transfer bus from Yale to the Gordon Conference on Sunday June 26th.

NOTE: It is your responsibility to make your own accommodation arrangements. To facilitate this, a listing of nearby hotels and B&B’s is attached at the end of this letter. Further information can be found on the workshop website: http://wnsl.physics.yale.edu/events/June2005workshop

The aim of the workshop is to encourage the exchange of ideas on some of the physics opportunities that can be pursued at university facilities, such as the Tandem here at the Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory, with magnetic spectrometers, particle and gamma-ray detectors.

Some of our ideas for interesting physics goals and instrumentation issues to be addressed include:

·       Nuclear structure and reaction physics using recoil separators

·       Phase/shape transitions and collective modes

·       p-n interactions, intruder states, and the onset of deformation

·       Chiral symmetry in nuclei

·       Order and chaos in nuclear spectra

·       Mixed-symmetry states, N=Z nuclei

·       Lifetimes, magnetic moments, and g factors

·       Studies of neutron rich nuclei

·       Off line decay studies

·       Topics in nuclear astrophysics

As always, we plan to keep the meeting as informal as possible and to maximize the exchange of (novel) ideas and open discussion.

If you are interested in attending the workshop, please return the attached form below by email, fax or even by regular mail. You may also register at our web site (see above). The conference fee is due at the conference itself to avoid complicated, expensive and time-consuming money transfers.

A slide report will be distributed to participants after the meeting. A small registration fee of $75 will be charged to help defray costs.

We hope to see many of you at Yale in June.

Sincerely,

Rick Casten
